Functional
Nutrition is a phrase I coined to complement
the leading edge field of Functional Medicine,
which looks at natural ways to keep you from getting
diseases and conditions you are supposedly "programmed
to get" by your family genes.
As
we all know, Western Medicine is known for testing
and treating full-blown diseases with drugs
and/or surgery. Functional Medicine (and Functional
Nutrition) are about something entirely
different. These disciplines look for concrete,
though subtle, signs that something is amiss
in our bodies, and work (through diet, exercise
and supplementation) to prevent these signs
from progressing into full-blown diseases
through a preventive, largely natural, approach.
Conventional
allopathic medicine, on the other hand, is mainly
focused on attempts to cure already developed
diseases. For instance, conventional medicine
basically views Cardiovascular disease as a
malfunction of an engine, or a part of an engine,
which can be "fixed" or "repaired"
with either drugs or surgery, whereas Functional
Medicine (and Functional Nutrition) view
this same condition as a result of negative
lifestyle choices that can be changed through
sound nutrition combined with various forms
of exercise to alleviate already-existing symptoms
and to prevent others from developing.
